Batak Ethnic Groups
The Batak peoples comprise six distinct sub-groups, each with its own language, adat, and silsilah tradition. Choose a group below to explore its marga tarombo (lineage).
Toba
Centered around Lake Toba and Samosir. Lineage descends from Si Raja Batak through Guru Tatea Bulan and Raja Isumbaon.
Karo
Highland communities around Brastagi and Kabanjahe. Organized through Merga si Lima: Karo-karo, Ginting, Sembiring, Perangin-angin, Tarigan.
Pakpak
Dairi region and Pakpak Bharat. Organized through five suak (territorial divisions): Simsim, Keppas, Pegagan, Boang, Kelasen.
Simalungun
Centered around Pematang Siantar. Anchored by four royal marga (Damanik, Saragih, Sinaga, Purba) plus additional marga.
Mandailing
Communities of Mandailing Natal and southern Tapanuli. Major marga include Lubis, Nasution, Harahap, Hasibuan, Daulay.
Angkola
Angkola region of Tapanuli Selatan. Marga include Siregar, Hutagalung, Pohan Angkola, Ritonga, and the Angkola branches of Harahap and Hasibuan.
Each sub-group has its own origin tradition. The Toba Batak trace lineage from the mythological ancestor Si Raja Batak; Karo, Pakpak, Simalungun, Mandailing, and Angkola have their own ancestral narratives. Some Mandailing and Angkola communities consider themselves distinct ethnic groups rather than Batak sub-groups — we respect that identity in our framing.
